A showdown on the volleyball court on Friday night went in favor of the  Grand Rapids Community College Raiders.

The Raider topped the Muskegon Community College Jayhawks women’s team 3-1 in games. GRCC is alone atop the conference standings at 5-0 while Muskegon dropped to 4-1.

MCC captured the opening game 25-23 behind strong serving of Julie Larson and the attack of Beka German and Amanda Smolinski.

The momentum gained in the opening game could not be sustained as GRCC won Game 2 by the score of 25-15. GRCC’s offense came alive while Muskegon was not able answer back.

The Raiders won the third game 25-16 after jumping out to an early 8-3 lead.

GRCC won the match with a 25-18 victgory in the final game.

Top performers for the Raiders were Hannah Geelhoed and Nicole Czehowski with 11 and 10 kills respectively and Kaitlyn Wolters who contributed 31 assists and 7 kills.

The Jayhawks were led by German with 10 kills, 2 blocks and 10 digs, Amanda Smolinski with 10 kills and 6 digs, Amber Carmean with 19 digs and Larson with 6 kills, 34 assists, 3 aces and 7 digs.

Other contributors for the Jayhawks were Rachel Flagstead with 7 kills and 11 digs and Maggie Farrell with 6 kills and one block.

The Jayhawks return to action on Tuesday as they host Kellogg Community College at 5 p.m. at  Bartels -Rode Gymnasium.
