The Muskegon Lumberjacks’ offense could muster just one goal on Wednesday night and dropped a 4-1 decision to the host Dubuque Fighting Saints.

The Fighting Saints lead the best-of-five series 1-0 in games. Game 2 is set for Friday night, also in Dubuque.

On Wednesday night, the hosts grabbed a 3-0 lead by the midpoint of the second period.

In the opening period, Frank DiChiara gave the hosts the early lead at 8:53. Joseph Manna increased the advantage to 2-0 just 17 seconds into the second period. Twelve minutes later, Mike Szmatula made it 3-0.

Muskegon got on the board at 2:36 of the final period on goal by leading scorer Adam Gilmour. That goal came on the power play.

Karson Kuhlman capped the evening’s scoring with a goal at 13:55 of the third period.

Dubuque had a 28-21 advantage in shots on goal. Arthur Brey made 20 saves for Dubuque. Muskegon goaltender Kevin Lindskoug stopped 24 of the 28 shots he faced.

The series will shift to Muskegon for Game 3 at 5:15 p.m. on Sunday. If a fourth game is needed, it would be played in Muskegon at 7:15 Monday.
