MUSKEGON – The Spring Lake Laker varsity volleyball squad had a very successful Saturday, defeating six teams in pool play, and two more in the semifinals and finals to win the title at the Reeths-Puffer Invite.
In pool play, the Lakers downed Mason County Central, Fremont, Montague, Holland, Hart and Reeths Puffer to make it to bracket play.
Once there, the Lakers defeated Montague 15-25, 25-8, 15-11 in the semifinals, and then topped Fremont 25-19, 25-23 in the finals.
Spring Lake’s overall record now stands at 7-0-1.
Junior Kelsee Zuidema led the Lakers with 52 kills, followed by seniors Courtney Kyser and Lydia Suchecki, who both finished with 37 apiece.
Senior libero Rachel Pennington led in kills with 28, followed by senior Maya Denslow with 26, Zuidema with 23, and Senior Breanna Williams with 23.
Senior Karley Engelsman led in assists with 121.
“This is a great start,” said Laker head coach Sarah Jane Bulthuis. “We had a lot of different players contribute in many different ways. I was please with my setter mixing up the offense and using many different hitters. This contributed to the success of the day. I also thought our defense with blocking and digging helped to keep us in long rallies.
