Ludington boys, Spring Lake girls take Lakes 8 team cross titles

FRUITPORT – The Lakes 8 Conference cross country meet went down-right geographic Tuesday night, as the league’s most-southern school, Fremont, took the girls meet title, while the league’s most-northern school, Ludington, took the boys title.

The Spring Lake girls dominated, placing six Top 10 finishers to take the title with 27 points.

Ludington was second with 59, Fremont third with 68 and Orchard View was fifth.

Grant finished sixth.

Spring Lake’s Carlyn Arteaga took first-place honors with a time of 19 minuts, 26.06 second, while teammate Ashley Warner was fifth, Skyler Gilchrist sixth, Brooke Carrier seventh, Erin O’Keefe eighth and Lacie Piekarski was 10th overall for the Lakers.

Ludington was led by Lauren Biggs, who was second overall, and fellow Oriole Kayleigh Shillinger was ninth overall. Fremont’s Machenzie Lounsberry was third, and teammate Brooke Wahl was fourth.

In the boys race, Ludington landed five Top 10 finishes, including top runner Matthew Ritter, who beat the field by five seconds. Teammates Luke Schwass (3), Ben Jenson (5) and Chris Snow (7) helped in the winning effort.

Fremont was led by Matthew Zerfas’ second-place finish, with teammate Sam Stitt was 10th. Fruitport’s Aaron King was sixth, and Spring Lake’s Will Warmoth was eighth to lead their respective teams.
