The always strong Spring Lake softball team opened its season with a doubleheader split with Traverse City Central on Friday.

The Lakers took the opener 7-2. Pitcher Leah Vaughan was dominating, striking out 11 while scattering four hits.

Vaughan and Avery Flynn led the Laker offense with two hits apiece.

Traverse City Central got even in the nightcap, winning 5-3. Spring Lake pitcher Avery Flynn took the loss despite allowing only two earned runs. Molly Poole, Janna Ercole and Alicia Mumby each had two hits for the Lakers in Game 2.

Spring Lake is 1-1 on the season. TCC is 5-3.

The Lakers will play in the Lakeshore Grand Slam at Softball World on Saturday. Three other strong area teams – Oakridge, Fruitport, and Whitehall – will also be competing.
