The Muskegon Clippers opened a weekend road series with a 12-6 loss to the Grand Lake Mariners on Friday night.

The Clippers, who are fighting for the last playoff spot in the Northern Division, are now 17-17 on the season with eight games remaining.

Muskegon will look to even up the three-game set against the Mariners on Saturday night. First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m.

The trailed 1-0 after the first inning the tied the score 1-1 during the top half of the second frame.

The Mariners responded with five runs in the bottom of the second to take a 6-1 advantage.

The Clippers cut their deficit in the fourth inning to 6-2, but Grand Lake responded with five in the bottom of the fourth to take an 11-2 lead.

Muskegon added a run in the fifth inning before the Mariners scored one in the seventh to make the score 12-3 late in the game.

The Clippers closed out the scoring with three runs in the ninth inning.

Jimmy Allen, Tre Morris, Shane Easter, Cooper Peterson, Rob Zuwarski and Josh Holt each led Muskegon offensively with two hits apiece.

Ian Leatherman suffered the loss, allowing six runs on five hits in just 1 1/3 innings pitched.
