After a slow start, the North Muskegon Norsemen rolled over Mason County Central Friday 54-6 in West Michigan Conference football action on Friday.

Not much offense was produced in the first quarter. The Norse managed just a 33-yard field goal and led 3-0 after one.

But North Muskegon took control in the second quarter with a one-yard touchdown run from quarterback John Hayhurst, a 41-yard scoring burst by Stephan Smith, and a 66-yard TD dash by Joe Tarrant.

Hayhurst then completed a six-yard touchdown pass to Smith, and the Norse led 31-0 at halftime.

Hayhurst accounted for both scores in the third quarter. The first was a 65-yard pass to Brendan Moat, followed ty a 10-yard touchdown run.

Cole Hofmann got the Spartans on the board in the third quarter with an 89-yard kickoff return, make the score 45-6 heading into the fourth.

After the North Muskegon defense forced a safety at the start of the fourth, David Towner scampered in from 43 yards out to cap the scoring,

Hayhurst led the Norse with 184 yards passing and two touchdowns on nine completions, while adding 60 yards and two more touchdowns on the ground. Tarrant rushed for 101 yards on four carries and a score, and Smith chipped in 94 yards and a touchdown.

The Norsemen improved to 5-3 on the year (4-3 in the conference) and is now within a victory of clinching a state playoff berth. They will play unbeaten Orchard View next week. The Spartans fell to 2-6 overall and 2-5 in the WMC.
