GRAND RAPIDS–On the back of a dominant performance by Jaxi Long the Newaygo girls basketball team rolled into the holidays with an early present as they defeated Forest Hills Eastern 60-44 at Cornerstone University in the Holiday Tournament on Wednesday evening.

It was a close first half with the Lions ahead by just 21-19 over Forest Hills Eastern.

Coming out of the half the Lions turned up the pressure on defense allowing them to snag some easy baskets and extend their lead going on a 23-9 scoring run over the Hawks.

Good bounce back win for the girls,” said Coach Nate Thomasma. “We had a lot of people step up tonight to help us get the victory.”

Accounting for more than half of the team’s score Long scored 35 points for the Lions while also grabbing four rebounds and dishing out four assists. She also brought her career points to 1,015.

Also for the Lions, Kayla Fisk added eight points, six rebounds and two blocks while Emmerson Goodin had seven points, pulled down seven rebounds and had three steals.
