CUSTER — Mason County Eastern’s boys basketball team had little trouble dispatching Western Michigan D League rival Bear Lake, cruising to an easy 76-28 victory at home Tuesday night.

It was the Cardinals second straight win, and improved their record to 2-1 overall and 2-0 in the league. Bear Lake fell to 0-1 and 0-1, respectively.

The Cardinals flew out to a 19-10 lead at the end of the first eight minutes, and kept right on soaring.  It was 47-15 at the half, and the Lakers scored just two points in the third as the Cardinals opened up a 63-17 cushion.

“It was really a terrific defensive effort on our team’s part,” said Cardinals head coach Mark Forner.

“We only have seven varsity players, but they all played and contributed.

“I was very pleased with our aggressiveness and physicality on both ends of the floor. We were able to out-rebound Bear Lake, and that was a key to the game.”

Eli Shoup led the Cardinals with 28 points and 12 rebounds, while Wyatt Crawford tossed in 21 with seven 3-point makes, and James Drake added 14. Drake also had five steals and four offensive rebounds.

The Cardinals travel to Big Rapids Crossroads Thursday night.
