SHELBY — Surviving a run by Whitehall late in the game, Shelby’s boys basketball team held on for a 55-54 victory over Whitehall at home Friday night in the West Michigan Conference,  

The Tigers had a slim 8-6 lead after the first quarter and then outscored the Vikings, 13-8 in the second period to take a 21-14 edge at the half.  

Whitehall outscored the Tigers, 20-16 in the third period and shaved the margin down to 37-34 entering the fourth quarter. The Vikings had a 20-18 edge in the final period but it wasn’t enough.  

Joseph Hayes paced the Tigers with 20 points and nine rebounds. Mason Garcia contributed 11 points and Bishop Lee chipped in with 10.  

Leading the Vikings was Jack Houtterman with 13 points. Also scoring in double figures were Camden Thompson and Red Watson each with 10.  

Shelby improved its record to 5-3 overall and 4-2 in the league. The Tigers are next scheduled to play at Mason County Central on Monday, Jan. 24.  

Whitehall dropped its record to 5-4 overall and 4-2 in the conference. The Vikings are next scheduled to see action at Western Michigan Christian on Tuesday, January 25.
