LUDINGTON — After a couple of onesided losses at the Roundball Classic tournament downstate last week, the Ludington boys basketball team returned to its winning ways Tuesday night.

Hosting the Fremont Packers in a non-conference game at home in the friendly confines of Hawley Gymnasium, the Orioles bounced back strongly with a 77-51 victory.

The game was close throughout the first half, but the Orioles led all the way after gaining an 18-14 advantage at the end of the first quarter.

Ludington outscored the Packers, 21-16 in the second quarter and opened up a nine-point cushion, 39-30 at the halftime break. The Orioles put on the defensive clamps in the third period, and outscored the Packers, 21-5 to take a 60-35 lead into the fourth quarter. Ludington outscored Fremont, 17-16 in the last eight minutes.

David Schillinger led three Ludington players in double figures with 19 points. Peyton LaCombe scored 17 points for the Orioles, nine of which came in the third period, knocking down a pair of 3-point goals. Matthew Westhouse added 10 points.

Jordan McDonald had a game-high 18 points to lead Fremont.

Ludington improved its record to 3-4 and next is scheduled to play a Lakes 8 Activities Conference game at Orchard View on Friday night at 7 p.m. Fremont, which dropped to 2-4, is at home against Newaygo at Friday.
