SPRING LAKE—Spring Lake senior Evan McDermott signed his national letter of intent to play golf at the University of Nebraska.

McDermott will be under scholarship with the Cornhuskers.

Evan is one of the most hardworking athletes I have been around and is a genuinely great young man,” Spring Lake coach Dan Start said. “His dedication to the classroom and the game of golf is exceptional.”

McDermott led the OK Blue last year with a 9-hole average of 38. He finished third in the state in Division 2 with a two-day score of 143.

His mental toughness on the course is what sets him apart from the competition,” Start said. “His ability to move on from both good and bad shots to focus on the next shot is an incredibly mature approach to the game and is rare to see at the high school level.

When you add his physical abilities to his mental approach, I am truly excited to see what he can do not only this year, but also moving into his collegiate career at Nebraska.”

First-year coach Brett Balak is elated to have McDermott with the Cornhuskers.

“We have a lot of things to offer here at Nebraska,” Balak said. We’re young and we are building and getting better.

“Evan will help us in a lot of ways,” he said., “We’re bringing in a bunch of talented kids and Evan is definitely one of those kids. He is a super kid and comes from a great family. He’s a great golfer and a great student.”
