HESPERIA — Spring Lake’s girls softball team captured the championship of the Ken Smith Memorial tournament in Hesperia on Saturday with an 11-1 victory over Shelby.

Picking up the win in the circle for the Lakers was Avery Flynn, who struck out 12 batters.

Alexa Carter and Tessa Britt were the leading hitters for the Lakers as each of them went 3-for-4 at the plate.

Flynn contributed to her own cause, going 2-for-2 with two walks, while Kendra Kieft, Tegan Rose and Alena Martin each came through with hits.

The Lakers turned back Newaygo 4-2 in the first game of the day with Flynn twirling a nifty three-hitter and striking out 12, giving her 24 for the day.

Leading the way at the plate was Tessa Britt who clouted a home run in the fourth inning. Kaylin Solack stroke out a double in the fifth which pushed across the tying run.

In the seventh inning, Carter and Kieft hit back-to-back singles, which was followed by an error before Rose put down a sacrifice bunt to finish the scoring.

Spring Lake improved to 14-4 on the season.
