MUSKEGON — It was 1-1 early, but then Manistee’s boys soccer team opened up the floodgates and overwhelmed Orchard View in a 9-1 West Michigan Conference win at Muskegon on Monday night.

The Chippewas ended the game with 7 minutes to play in the second half once they scored their ninth goal to give them an eight-goal lead.

It was Manistee’s fourth straight win.

“We kind of jumped right off at the start, and they snuck one by us soon after our first goal,” Manistee coach Brandon Prince said. “After that, though, we didn’t look back. The one thing I love is the balance. You see that many names on the scoresheet, that’s good.”

Two of the Chippewas’ veteran players, Jacob Scharp and Luke Senters, scored two goals apiece to lead the way.

Scoring single goals were foreign exchange students Rafael Goncalves and Gres Mardenilli, Ethan Edmondson, Jaret Edmondson and Luke Smith.

Scharp had a big game offensively with three assists. Foreign exchange students Jannes Reuting and Goncalves each contributed an assist.

“We’re just putting the ball on the last guy’s foot, and they’re doing their job,” Prince added. “With those assists, it’s the balanced attack we like to see. It’s what we talk about, everybody doing the job and wherever the ball falls, we’ll finish it. But, we have to be patient with each other. They bought into it, and it was good across the board.”

Manistee improved its record to 11-3 overall, 7-1 in the conference. The Chippewas travel to Cadillac for a non-conference game at 12:45 p.m. Saturday.

Orchard View will host Shelby on Wednesday.
