SHELBY — Molli Schultz scored 16 points to lead the Shelby girls basketball team as the Tigers opened the season wtih a 42-28 victory over Newaygo at home Tuesday night.

Kendall Zaveri also was in double figures with 12 points and she added four steals on defense, while Aubrey Klotz contributed seven points and five assists.

In other statistics, Terri Woodbury pulled down seven rebounds and Biloxi Lee and Claire Gowell each had five rebounds for the Tigers.

Grace Painter scored 11 points to lead the Lions and she also had seven rebounds. Barbara Toth chipped in five points. Addison Goodin led with nine rebounds.

“Tough one out of the gate for us tonight,” said Lions’ head coach Nathan Thomasma. “Our girls competed well, and kept battling throughout.

“But, we just missed way too many shots and had a couple of defensive lapses that cost us. Give a lot of credit to Shelby. They are well coached and really made us pay for our mistakes.”

Newaygo grabbed a 7-6 lead at the end of the first quarter, but then the Tigers took over. They outscored the Lions, 17-11 in the second period for a 23-18 lead at the half.

Shelby had a 9-7 advantage in the third quarter, and went into the fourth period leading 32-25 and then put the game away with a 10-3 fourth quarter.
