GRAND RAPIDS–The Mona Shores boys basketball team defeated the defending state champion Tri Unity Christian 56-44 in round one of the Cornerstone University Holiday Tournament Tuesday night.
 
Mona Shores led 11-8 after the first quarter of action. The Sailors outscored Tri-Unity 19-17 in the second stanza to take a 30-25 lead into the halftime break.
 
Mona Shores extended their lead throughout the second half with a 8-5 scoring advantage in the third quarter and 18-14 in the final eight minutes of play to secure the 12-point margin win.
 
Leading the Sailors offensive attack was Jordan Bledsoe with 22 points and 5 rebounds. Jonathan Pittman chipped in with 11 points and 11 rebounds while Mason Hallett added 10 points and 4 rebounds. Ryan Opsommer added 7 points, 3 assists and 3 steals.
 
Mona Shores improves to 2-2 on the season and will be back on the court on Thursday to face East Kentwood in the Cornerstone University Holiday Tournament championship game in the Red Division at 4:45 PM.
