KENT CITY  — Kent City and Ravenna co-hosted the Kubasiak Softball Tournament on Saturday.

The event is in honor of Peter and Erika Kubasiak, a pair of Ravenna students that lost their lives in an automobile accident in 2016.

After opening with a 4-3 win over Fremont in the first game of pool play, the Kent City girls softball team was shutout by Cedar Springs, 6-0.

Lexie Bowers was 3-for-3 at the plate against Fremont with three runs scored. But the Lady Eagles had only one other hit, that by Savannah Miller.

Jacee Hoffman went the distance in the circle for Kent City. She allowed two earned runs with eight strikeouts and two walks.

Fremont outhit the Lady Eagles, 10-4, but stranded too many runners on base. Two costly errors opened the door for the Lady Eagles to score the two runs to pull it out.

Sage Vandenberg, Maddie Baden and Elise Pfeiffer each had two hits for the Lady Packers.

Kent City suffered a 6-0 shutout loss to Cedar Springs in its other game.

The Lady Eagles managed five hits against the Lady Red Hawks, who finished with eight.

Hoffman was the leading hitter with two hits. Bowers, Jade Mortensen and Hannah Stellini had one hit apiece.

Fremont hung with Cedar Springs right until the end before the Lady Red Hawks pulled away late for the win.

Pfeiffer and Izable Austin finished with two hits for the Lady Packers. Austin had a triple in the bottom of the second inning.
