HOLTON –The Holton girls basketball team got a crucial win over Newaygo on Tuesday evening by a score of 43-29 in a non-conference contest.

“Another game we really needed and this was a good team win where several girls all played a big role in the win,” said Holton head coach Robert Jordan.

Holton led by just two points after the first half as they were ahead, 19-17.

Solid play continued for the Red Devils and their lead grew to 29-24 at the end of the third quarter.

The final quarter of play is where the Red Devils really secured the win and outscored the Lions 14-5.

Aubrey Goyings led the Holton offense with 11 points. Ryann Robbins hauled down 11 rebounds and scored nine points while Abbie Fowler added eight points, five assists and four steals. Layla Cannady also contributed eight points, including two big three-pointers in the fourth quarter.

The Red Devils’ defense held the Lions to just nine field goals on the night.

The Lions’ Naomi Schillman scored 12 points and pulled down four rebounds. Grace Painter contributed eight points and  grabbedsix rebounds.

“Shot the ball better tonight but just did not rebound the ball well enough and had a bad start to the fourth quarter,” said Newaygo head coach Nathan Thomasma. “Give credit to Holton.  They hit a few shots to start the fourth quarter and really made good things happen.”

Holton (7-8, 3-5) will host Hesperia on Thursday. The Red Devils and Panthers will compete for the “Battle of M-120 Trophy”.

Newaygo (4-12, 2-5) will travel to White Cloud on Friday.
