KENT CITY—Kent City senior Sam Martini has been selected as the Local Sports Journal boys’ cross country Athlete of the Month for August

Martini started the season by winning the Michael Scarbrough Invitational in Grant with a time of 16:59, before cruising to the Sunset Division victory at South Christian’s Under the Lights Invite with 187 runners from all different sized schools. His time was a season best of 16:01 and was close to his lifetime personal record. Then he won the Early Eagle Invite at Kent City to have three wins under his belt to start the cross country season, finishing with a time of 17:00.2

“Sam does well in both the classroom and the athletic arena,” said Kent City cross country coach Jill Evers.

“He gives relentless effort to his classwork as well as practices, ensuring that he’s successful in both realms. He’s learning that every race doesn’t need to be a personal record, but there can be things to learn and try in each practice and race to make oneself better. After finishing 6th in Division 3 in 2022, Sam wants to have a season where he continues to improve throughout the year, ending with his best performances,” Evers commented.
