FRUITPORT – The Fruitport Trojans couldn’t quite get over the hump in their 36-22 non-conference loss to Grand Rapids Christian on Thursday.

It was three-straight scores by the Eagles in the third and fourth quarters that put the game just out of reach for Fruitport (0-2).

Trojan quarterback Brandon Dornbos and wide receiver Bobby Canfield did all they could in the air while Kayden Beardsley led on the ground.

Beardsley got Fruitport started with a 28-yard t0uchdown run to give his team an 8-7 lead in the first quarter.

After a 42-yard field goal by the Eagles, Canfield connected on a 40-yard touchdown pass from Dornbos. Beardsley converted on the 2-point conversion and the pair of strikes gave Fruitport a 16-10 lead at halftime.

The Trojans had few responses in the second half for Grand Rapids Christian as the Eagles took a 30-16 lead that was capped off by an 80-yard interception return early in the fourth quarter.

Fruitport was able to respond when Dornbos connected with Canfield on a 67-yard scoring strike late in the fourth to bring the team within a touchdown, 30-22.

Grand Rapids Christian answered back with its final score to close out on the Trojans.

Dornbos finished 10-of-24 passing for 150 yards with two touchdowns and 40 yards on the ground.

Canfield led the receivers with seven catches for 146 yards while Beardsley finished with 127 yards rushing on 18 attempts.

Defensively, Fruitport was also led by Beardsley with 10 tackles. Day Day Williams had six tackles and Pierce Jolman had six as well.
