SHELBY – Shelby’s boys soccer team hosted Orchard View in a WMC matchup on Friday and defeated the Cardinals, 2-0.

With both teams fighting for possession in the middle early, there was no clear opportunity for either to gain an advantage. But, 15 minutes into the first half however, the Tigers began to find passes that put them in opportune positions. Still, the score sat at 0-0 when halftime hit.

Adjustments from Shelby coach Jairo Coronado allowed the Tigers to maneuver around OV’s defense in the second half.

Alan Arreola notched the first goal of the night on an assist from Venancio Cadena. The play was started in the middle by Mauricio Castillo. Then, Trey Gauthier redeemed a near miss on an assist from Ignacio Ortiz to put the Tigers up 2-0.

Shelby’s keeper Ismael “Smiley” Valdez had a solid night in goal with six saves.

The Tigers (6-3-3, 3-2 in the WMC) will travel to Fremont on Wednesday for a battle with the Packers.
