GRAND RAPIDS – The Greater Muskegon co-op swimming team didn’t let a broken down bus stop them from grabbing a much-needed victory on Thursday. 

The Turtles sunk Grand Rapids Union, 101-30.

The Turtles took first place in 11 of 12 events and posted a season-high 18 personal-record performances.

“Tonight’s meet saw the Turtles swim and dive with a lot more energy and heart,” said Coach Mick Homan. “It was great to see the team having fun and swimming more relaxed and not overthinking things.”

The Turtles snagged the top three spots in the 500 free, 200 medley relay, 100 back and 100 breast and the top two places in all three relays.

Senior captain Sydney Sytsema won the 100 free (1:02.37) and the 100 back (1:10.76) while senior Marilyn Gaston won the 50 free (28.06). Senior Millie Curow claimed the 500 free (6:39.98) and junior Maria Eenigenburg won the 200 free (2:29.38). Sophomore Hollen Emmick finished first in dives with 171.95 points.

“It was a totally different feeling and a total team effort,” Homan said. “It was a great, much-needed win, and I was very proud of how we swam with a lot of positive and fun energy.”

The Turtles (2-6, 0-1) will be at Spring Lake on Tuesday.
