STANTON–After a slow start, the Kent City Eagles football team kicked the running game into high gear on Thursday evening in a 32-14 road win over the Central Montcalm Hornets.

Led by Caden Hartzell, who rushed for 143 yards on 22 carries, the Eagles racked up 328 yards on the ground. Carson Gorton gained 110 yards on 18 carries. Joe VanOffelen picked up 42 yards on 12 attempts.

Gorton scored the Eagles’ first touchdown on a 2-yard run in a first quarter which saw the host team leading 7-6 at the end of the opening period.

Hartzell found the endzone for Kent City in the second quarter on a 46-yard scoop play while Gorton picked up his second touchdown on a 39-yard run. Kent City went into the half with a 20-14 lead.
 
Hartzell and the Eagles put the game away in the second half as he scored on a 15-yard run in the third quarter and then scored his third touchdown on a 6-yard run in the fourth quarter.
 
Cooper Stinson led the Kent City defense with seven tackles. Zach Devoogd, Grayson Preston and VanOffelen each had five tackles.
 
Kent City (2-0) will be back in action next Friday as they will take on Buchanan (1-1) in a game that will be played at Hope College in Holland.
