SPARTA – The Kent City volleyball team fought to a second-place finish at the Sparta Invitational on Saturday.
The Eagles were 1-1-1 in pool play with a win over Cedar Springs (25-17, 25-14), a draw against Comstock Park (24-26, 25-23) and a loss to Shelby (20-25, 21-25).
In bracket play, the Eagles opened with a victory against host Sparta (25-12, 25-14) then advanced to avenge their previous loss to Shelby (28-30, 25-20, 17-15).
The Eagles faced off against Fremont in the championship round but ultimately fell in three sets (25-19, 15-25, 10-15).
Maddie Geers recorded her 1,000th career kill with 66 on the day along with 81 digs and eight blocks. Kaden Perkins had 58 digs, 27 kills and 11 aces, while Cailynn Hartzell added 116 assists and four aces.
Irelyn Sullivan and Hannah Stellini chipped in six and four aces, respectively.
Kent City is set to face Grant on Wednesday for the Division 2 district tournament. The match is at Newaygo.
