REMUS – The Ludington girls cross country team ran away from the field on Friday and captured the Division 2 regional championship at Remus-Chippewa Hills.
 
The Orioles, fueled by second- and third-place finishes from Annabelle Lowman and Summer Brower, finished with 51 points. Runner-up Petoskey had 119 and Cadillac was third with 122.
 
Other area teams included Fremont in eighth place with 195, Whitehall in ninth at 2-0, Newaygo 11th at 238 and Oakridge was 13th with 285.
 
In the boys’ race, Gladwin finished on top with 61, followed by Petoskey with 77 and Sparta with 93. Fremont, which had the individual winner in Sean Pettis, finished fourth with 112. Ludington was sixth with 153, Whitehall was eighth at 177 and Oakridge came in 10th with 285.
 
The top three teams qualify for next weekend’s state championship at Michigan International Speedway.
