SCOTTVILLE — They would have liked to finish the regular season with a win to take into the girls volleyball district tournament next week, but that isn’t how it played out for the Mason County Central Spartans.

Hosting the Onekama Portagers in a non-conference match prior to which they honored their seniors, the Spartans fell in three straight sets, 23-25, 15-25 and 23-25.

Wearing the school colors for the final time in their high school careers for the Spartans were Grace Weinert, Aylin Davila, Riley Mast and Wren Nelson.

“We started off the first set with all of our seniors playing,” said Spartans head coach Erin O’Harra. “They did an amazing job and worked well together.”

Leading the way for the Spartans was Payton Cory who finished the night 11-of-11 serving with one ace, 12-of-18 in digs, 6-of-7 in attacks, 23-of-25 in sets with six assists.

Also filling up the stat sheet was Ellie Bendele as she went 8-of-8 at the service line with three aces, was 7-of-10 in serve receive and had 13 digs.

Wren Nelson was perfect at the service line, going 13-of-13 with one ace, was 5-of-8 in serve receive, had seven digs, was 10-of-12 in attacks with four kills, had four blocks and two sets.

Mikayla McVicker finished 4-of-7 in serve receive and had four digs. Weinert ended the night 7-of-8 in serve receive, had three digs and was 12-of-15 in attacks with four kills.

Emily Campbell was 5-of-7 serving, had three digs and six assists. Aylin Davila finished 2-of-3 serving with one ace, was 14-of-15 in serve receive, had six digs, one attack and one kill.

Anna Sterley was 2-of-3 in serve receive and had four digs. Tory Dunblazer finished 5-of-9 serving with two aces, was 10-of-10 i serve receive, had six digs, was 29-of-36 in attacks with five kills and had six blocks.

Mast finished the night 4-of-4 serving with one ace, was 2-of-5 in serve receive, had one dig and was 3-of-3 in attacks with one kill.

The Spartans ended the regular season 8-19-4 and open district tournament play Monday at Hesperia with a 7 p.m. start.
