MADISON – The Muskegon Lumberjacks bounced back on Saturday night to earn a split in Madison against the Capitols.
The Jacks overcame an early two-goal deficit by scoring five unanswered goals to beat the Capitols 5-2 at the Bob Suter Ice Arena in Wisconsin.
Muskegon improves to 5-2 on the season, good for 10 points and a third-place tie in the USHL’s Eastern Conference.
The Lumberjacks will return to action next weekend with a home-and-home series with the Under-17 Team USA squad starting on Friday night in Plymouth.
The Capitols opened the scoring with goals from Finn Brink and Austin Burnevik at the 2:33 and 7:15 marks of the first period.
Muskegon cut its deficit at the 12:34 mark of the opening period on a goal from Cody Croal. The Jacks then tied the contest with a goal for Joe Connor 15:21 into the first period.
The contest was tied 2-2 at the first intermission.
The Lumberjacks took their first lead of the night on Croal’s second goal of the contest at the 4:18 mark of the second period. Hunter Anderson added a goal 14:12 into the middle period to give the Jacks a 4-2 advantage headlining into the final stanza.
The Jacks scored the lone goal of the third period at the 2:30 mark from Ty Henricks.
Muskegon outshot the Capitols 32-20.
Paxton Geisel earned the win in net for the Lumberjacks, stopping 18-of-20 shots on goal.
Both teams failed on their three man advantages.
