LUDINGTON — Right now Maddy Vaara is focused on the Ludington girls volleyball team’s battle for the regional championship Thursday night.

It’s the first time the Orioles have been this far since 1997.
But, when the season does end – and she hopes it’s not for a couple more weeks after the state finals – Vaara can begin turning to the next step playing in college for Ferris State University.

Vaara took pen in hand Wednesday and signed her a national letter of intent to continue her education as well as her athletic career for the Bulldogs.

She had to decide between Ferris and two other colleges that had shown some interest in her, Saginaw Valley University and Aquinas.  She chose Ferris because of the coaches and the academics the school offered.

Ferris State women’s volleyball coach Tia Brandel expressed her excitement in adding Vaara to the Bulldogs’ program.

“She is a fabulous person, and we know she will be that teammate who really impacts the people around her,” Brandel said. “Maddy is a versatile athlete and player. Her dynamic attacking and blocking will bring strength to the team in the outside and the middle. Her work ethic and competitive spirit are just perfect for the Bulldog team.”

Vaara, the daughter of Sten and Becky Vaara, said her academic interest lies in the medical field, specifically physical therapy. She will major in pre-medical studies.
