GRAND RAPIDS – Lilly Holmes led the Newaygo girls’ basketball team to victory at the West Michigan Hoop Summit on Saturday.

Holmes earned a double-double of 14 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks to help the Lions take down Grand Rapids Union, 39-25.

The Lions held a 17-15 first-half lead before coming out in the third quarter and outscoring Union 15-8 to stretch the lead.

“We executed pretty well on the offensive end and stayed aggressive,” said Newaygo coach Nathan Thomasma. “We were 10-of-16 from the line which was easily the most free throws we have shot in a game.”

The defense limited Union to just 10 second-half points.

Naomi Schillman and Amaya Lathrop contributed five points apiece, while Addison Goodin added seven rebounds and four points.

The win was needed to help the Lions shake off a bad stretch and go into the break on a good note.

“Overall, I’m very happy for the girls,” Thomasma said. “We were on a three-game skid, so it was nice to break that losing streak. We don’t play again until January, so we have time to work on stuff at practice the next few weeks.”

Newaygo (3-3, 1-2) will be at home against Ravenna on Wednesday, Jan. 10.
