SCOTTVILLE — Good shooting allowed the Mason County Central girls basketball team to survive a big night by Holton senior Ryann Robins in Thursday night’s West Michigan Conference Rivers Division debut.

Robins ended the night with a game-high 21 points and she also grabbed 10 rebounds, but the Spartans were a sizzling 48 percent from the field and rolled to a 54-32 win.

“We did a good job of getting ball pressure, and forcing some mistakes which we took advantage of,” said Spartans coach Brian Beebe. “Holton does a good job with their half-court zone defense, and we at times were a bit too stagnant against it. But, we found a way to get some transition looks as the game wore along.”

On the other side, Red Devils coach Robert Jordan mentioned their cold shooting.

“We struggled to put the ball in the hoop tonight and ran out of gas in the second half,” Jordan said. “We only had seven (players) tonight, and our lack of conditioning showed. So, we are going to have to address that over the next few weeks, and if we can finish games, we will continue to struggle in the second half against good teams.”

Mallory Miller led the Spartans with 18 points, Eva Hradel scored 12 (eight in the first half) and Wren Nelson added 11 points and blocked three shots.

Other than Robins, no one else scored more than five points for the Red Devils.

The Spartans improved to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the conference, and travel to Ravenna for another league game next Friday.

Holton fell to 1-1 overall and 0-1 in the conference, with its next game Tuesday at home against Hesperia.
