The Montague wrestling squads took to the mats for competition on Saturday.

The boys hosted the Holiday Mat Cat Duals and finished in fourth place.

Chris Aebig recorded his 100th victory and finished a perfect 5-0 along with Fletcher Thommen. Jimmy Thommen was 4-1 in his first time back in the lineup since injury.

“Aebig has been dominant thus far this season either pinning or technical falling all his opponents,” said coach Kristoffer Maddox. “Fletcher had a great day as well. He has been solid so far this season.”

The girls grabbed a first-place finish in the Kent County Classic at East Kentwood.

Abby Thommen, Savannah Winkleblack, Trisha Beckman and Emma Pendell finished runner-up in their respective weight classes. Ava Pelton had a third-place finish including a win against two-time state placer Abby Vanderzwag of West Ottawa.

Zaniya Meza finished fourth with her first-ever high school tournament finish.

“Our girls really make us proud here at Montague,” said Maddox. “All of them are capable of doing great things. We are seeking and chasing competition this season to challenge our girl to allow for preparation to finish strong.”

Montague boys will be back to action on Saturday, Dec. 30 for the Eric Scott Holiday Mat Classic.

Montague girls will host the Lady Mat Cat Invitational on Friday, Dec. 29.
