NEWAYGO – The Newaygo girls basketball team opened the season with a second-half comeback against Montague on Tuesday. Newaygo won, 34-23.

The Lions were down 15-12 at the break, but cut the deficit to lead by one point going into the fourth quarter.

Newaygo’s Kija Westbrook led the way with 11 points and six rebounds. Maria Riddering had nine points, seven rebounds and four steals, while Naomi Schillman scored six points.

“It was a good-spirited win for the team tonight,” said Newaygo coach Nathan Thomasma. “The girls competed well on the defensive end and it kept us in the ball game until we got some shots to fall. They earned a good tough win tonight against a solid Montague team.”

Addison Pranger led the Wildcats with nine points and Braylyn Bultema scored seven.

Newaygo (1-0) will open CSAA Conference action at home against Central Montcalm on Friday.

Montague (0-1) will be at Whitehall on Thursday.
