The Reeths-Puffer boys’ basketball team held on to defeat Forest Hills Central 74-67 on Tuesday in their season opener.

The Rockets had a 22-13 lead after the first quarter and led 42-21 at halftime.

Forest Hills Central went on a 23-12 third-quarter run to cut its deficit to 54-44 heading into the final stanza and outscored the Rockets 23-20 during the fourth quarter.

Travis Ambrose paced Reeths-Puffer with 31 points, 11 rebounds and four blocks while Jaxson Whitaker added 24 points, four assists and three steals.

Brayden Mitchelson chipped in nine points and six assists.

“We had a fantastic start in first half on the offensive and defensive ends,” said Reeths-Puffer coach Nate Aardema. “In the second half, Forest Hills Central made its run, but we were able to answer it and hang on to go to 1-0 on the season.

“I am proud of our guys for their mental and physical toughness. It was a great way to start the year against a very good and well coached FHC team.”
