PENTWATER — Pentwater’s girls basketball team had little trouble dispatching Fruitport Calvary Christian, cruising to a 41-17 victory over the Eagles in a non-league game Monday night at home.

“Our goal was to come out quick in the first quarter, and I think we did a great job,” said Pentwater coach Joe Gorton. “Monday night games always make me nervous, as we have a bit of a layoff and weren’t able to get into the gym (Sunday).”

But the Falcons jumped out to a 13-6 lead after one, and never looked back. Pentwater really tightened down on defense in the second, outscoring the Eagles 14-2 and built a whopping 27-8 lead at the half.

Fruitport Calvary never got its offense to shift into gear, with the Falcons outscoring the Eagles 14-9 in the second half to win easily.

“We switched to a zone defense in the second quarter and that really helped nullify the massive size advantage they had against us,” Gorton said. “We really tightened down defensively in the second. Offensively, we really moved the ball well. We got great looks all night long. Charlie Swanger and Sam Schaefer really facilitated the ball well on the outside.

“Mandi Sayles, Mackenna Hasil and Lauren Davis really moved the ball well from the high post.”

Aubrie Adams finished as the Falcons’ major offensive leader with 13 points with two 3-pointers. Sayles added 11, Swanger seven and Hasil six.

Pentwater is only 1-0 and has a busy week ahead, hosting Brethren Tuesday and then Marion on Thursday night in a league matchup.
