LUDINGTON — A quick start staked the Ludington boys basketball team to an early lead but Spring Lake finished strong to snare a 58-53 non-conference win Friday night.

The Orioles exploded out of the gates to outscore the Lakers, 21-12 in the first quarter. Spring Lake bounced back in the second, though, with an 18-5 advantage to take a 30-26 halftime lead.

It was the Orioles’ turn in the third quarter, as they outscored the Lakers, 18-12 to regain the lead, 44-42. But the Lakers enjoyed a 16-9 edge in the fourth to prevail.

Zach Schlepp went 4-of-4 at the free throw line in the fourth quarter to seal the win for the Lakers and led them in scoring with 18 points. He was 9-of-10 overall at the line.

Karson George contributed 14 points and nine rebounds, while sophomore Ayden Ayers chipped in with nine points for Spring Lake. Jaden Core added five points, four assists, four rebounds, three steals and two blocked shots.

Gage Jones paced the Orioles with 18 points, followed by David Schillinger with 14 and Jack Stidham with 10.

Spring Lake is 1-0 host Whitehall next Tuesday.

Ludington dropped to 1-1 overall, with its next game next Wednesday at home against non-conference opponent Traverse City St. Francis.
