HESPERIA — In their first action of the season, Hesperia’s girls basketball team defeated Walkerville in dominant fashion, 42-20.

The Panthers and Wildcats both experienced shaky starts, but it was Hesperia’s ability to push through their opponents’ man defense that set them apart early.

Starting guard Kaley Cousineau sliced up the Wildcats in the first half, which opened the door for Grace Weberg to light it up from deep.

Cousineau and freshman Sarissa Conkle ended the night with eight points each. That was good enough for a second-place tie behind Weberg’s 17.

Maria Rodriguez led Walkerville with seven points while her sister, Heaven Rodriguez, had six.

Hesperia (1-0) hits the road on Thursday at North Muskegon.

Walkerville (0-1) will return home Thursday for a rivalry matchup with Pentwater.
