NORTON SHORES – The Western Michigan Christian girls’ basketball team opened the season with a convincing home victory on Tuesday evening.

The Warriors took down McBain Northern Michigan Christian, 43-20.

The lead was 17-10 at halftime, but the Warriors came out in the third quarter and outscored the Comets 16-3 to pull away.

“I am proud of how we played tonight,” said Coach Sarah Koetsier. “We worked well as a team and worked hard on defense to force a lot of turnovers. It is an exciting start to our season.”

Ashley Folkema led the way with 18 points and five steals, while Kate Derdowski added 12 points and four rebounds. Tressa Arkema threw in five points and five rebounds. Hannah Heiss contributed five steals and scored four points.

WMC hosts Muskegon Catholic Central on Friday for an Alliance League matchup.
