The Fruitport boys’ basketball squad fought all night and even took a five-point lead in the fourth quarter, but failed to lock in the victory and fell to Newaygo 50-47 in a non-league game on Tuesday.

The Trojans trailed 14-10 at the end of the first quarter, 25-20 at halftime and 38-35 heading into the final quarter.

The Lions were led by Logan Klomp with 18 points followed by Josiah Long with 12 and Blake Kerr with nine.  Caris Nelson pulled down nine rebounds and dished out four assists.

DayDay Williams led Fruitport with 14 points and eight rebounds while Ryan Bosch had a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Hudson Hazekamp chipped in eight points and five rebounds.

“A poor start to this game ultimately cost us,” said Fruitport coach Steve Erny. “We were able to fight back and take a five-point lead in the fourth quarter, but could not finish. It is a disappointing loss, but we will need to turn around quickly and bounce back as we start our second round of conference games.”
