REED CITY – Tipping off the doubleheader Tuesday night, the Mason County Central girls basketball team cruised to a 47-29 non-conference win in Reed City.

It was the Spartans fourth straight win and improved their record to 11-2 overall. They are 7-0 on the road.

“We played our best defensive half of the year in the first half,” Spartans coach Brian Beebe said.

The Spartans rode that solid defensive effort to a 19-5 first-quarter lead, and never looked back, taking a 34-9 lead at the end of the first half.

Mallory Miller scored 17 of her game-high 21 points in the first 16 minutes, while Evan Hradel and Wren Nelson each contributed six.

A key 3-pointer by Grace Weinert and a reverse layup from Jessica Peterson cut off a Reed City rally in the third quarter that had cut the Spartans lead to 14 and pushed it back out to 19.

Nelson filled up the stat sheet with 10 points, three blocked shots, two assists and two steals.

“They really flooded the paint early against her, but Wren did a great job helping the team on both ends,” Beebe said.

Central hosts Kent City for another non-conference game on Saturday.
