HESPERIA — Hesperia cruised to a double-digit lead in the first half on Thursday and throttled Mason County Eastern 37-19 in a girls’ basketball game.

The Cardinals got off to a slow start, scoring just two points in the first quarter and trailed 15-2. Hesperia outscored Eastern 12-9 in the second period and built a 27-11 at the half. 

Neither team got much going in the third period as each scored just three points, which left the Cardinals trailing, 30-14. Eastern was outscored 7-5 in the fourth quarter. 

“It was a tough night shooting,” said Eastern coach Jake Smith. “The girls battled hard throughout the night against a physical Hesperia squad.” 

Abby Joppich paced the Panthers with a game-high 12 points. Grace Werberg finished with nine and Kaley Cousineau tossed in eight. 

Lucy Shoup scored four points to lead the Cardinals.

Hesperia is 2-8 on the season and resumes action Monday at home against Walkerville. 

Eastern dropped to 1-8 overall and is scheduled to host Cadillac Heritage Christian on Monday.
