MONTAGUE – Hart’s girls basketball team rode a strong first half to a 58-32 win over Montague on Thursday night.

The Pirates showed no signs of rust after having two games canceled in the eight days prior.

Great defense in the first half helped Hart suffocate Montague’s offense and force turnovers that led to quick buckets in transition. The Pirates played an unselfish brand in the first two quarters as well, collecting 13 baskets on nine assists.

That play transitioned into the second half, allowing Hart to pull away down the stretch. In total, the Pirates finished with 23 steals and 17 assists on 23 made shots.

Addi Hovey led the way for Hart with 20 points, five rebounds, three assists and three blocks. Abby Hicks also had a big night, scoring 19 and adding eight rebounds and three assists. Kelsey Copenhaver chipped in eight points and 10 rebounds while Breslyn Porter had eight steals and Rilynn Porter led with five assists.

Leaders for Montague were Avah Vandermeulen (13 points) and Braylyn Bultema (five points).

The Pirates improved to 6-2 overall and are still 4-0 in the WMC Rivers. Hart will now gear up for a rivalry meeting with Shelby on Tuesday.

Montague (1-8, 1-3 WMC Lakes) has lost seven straight games. The Wildcats will look to end that streak on Tuesday when they host Orchard View.
