SHELBY – The Holton girls basketball team cruised by Hesperia, 48-24, in the Division 3 district semifinal on Wednesday evening.

The Red Devils led 30-12 after the first two quarters and continued to grow their lead with a 15-2 advantage in the third quarter.

“Our goal all year was to get a district title and we felt we had a team that could compete for one,” said Holton coach Robert Jordan. “

Ryann Robins led the Red Devils with a double-double of 17 points and 11 rebounds. Aubrey Goyings scored eight points and grabbed 10 rebounds, while Layla Cannady scored eight points.

“Just one more game against a dangerous Shelby team, but they are much better than their record reflects,” said Jordan. “We are going to need a solid defensive effort all game and some balance offensively. If we can do that, we will be in the game and have a real chance.”

Holton (14-9) will take on Shelby at 7 p.m. Friday for the district crown.

Hesperia finished with a 3-20 record.
