CUSTER — Mason County Eastern’s girls basketball team dropped a 43-24 non-conference game to visiting Cadillac Heritage Christian Monday night.

It was the Cardinals’ eighth straight loss. They haven’t won since beating Bear Lake in a 36-34 nailbiter.

Brailyn Johnson was the Cardinals’ leading scorer with 13 points, with one 3-pointer. Lucy Shoup added five. Eastern was only 2-of-8 at the free throw line.

“I was really pleased with our intensity tonight,” Coach Jake Smith said. “The girls came ready to compete and did so the whole game.

“We ran into some good perimeter shooting, and just couldn’t match their shooting. Brailyn played great defense out front and forced multiple turnovers.

“We did well competing against their height on the inside, but they got some second-chance buckets.”

Eastern trailed by one two points, 8-6, at the end of the first quarter, but then fell further back when Cadillac outscored the Cardinals 11-6 in the second and took a 19-12 lead into the half.

Both teams scored eight points in the third, leaving the Cardinals with a 27-20 deficit and they were outscored 10-4 in the fourth.

Now 1-9 on the season, the Cardinals are scheduled to travel to Manistee Catholic Central for a West Michigan D League game Wednesday night.
