HESPERIA — It’s never easy to play games on back-to-back nights, but the Mason County Central girls basketball team displayed good energy in getting off to a good start on the road Wednesday night at Hesperia.

The Spartans used a smothering defense to go along with a highly productive offense in blowing the Panthers off the floor, 62-13, in the West Michigan Conference Rivers Division game.

With the victory, Mason County stayed on the heels of the Hart Pirates, its second in a row, and continued their upward trend overall.

All 14 Spartans contributed in some way to the win, too, as 10 different players scored and a lot of younger players were inserted into the game to gain valuable experience.

Hesperia couldn’t get anything going against the Spartans, who tipped things off with a 20-2 first quarter and then outscored the Panthers 16-4 in the second for a 32-6 lead at the half.

Mallory Miller was the Spartans’ leading scorer with 13 points, and senior center Riley Mast netted a season-high 10 points. Wren Nelson added eight with 11 rebounds and three blocked shots.

The Spartans are now 9-2 overall and 5-1 in the conference and next travel to Holton on Friday.

Hesperia fell to 3-8, 0-6 in the conference and hosts North Muskegon on Friday night.
