MARION — Cold shooting left the Mason County Eastern girls basketball team begging for points Thursday night in a 46-28 loss to Marion on the road in the West Michigan D League.

It extended the Cardinals losing streak to five straight.

“We just couldn’t get some buckets to fall early, and then tried forcing some passes which led to some run outs by Marion,” Eastern coach Jake Smith said.

“Lucy Shoup and Kennady Tyler both rebounded well tonight, and were aggressive in crashing the basket on the offensive end. Annabelle Zwagerman played well off the bench (five rebounds and five points).”

The Cardinals were outscored 25-8 in the first half, getting just a free throw in the first quarter. While they enjoyed better success in the second half with 20 points, they still couldn’t match the Eagles production.

Eastern’s leading scorer was Tyler who netted 11 while Shoup chipped in with 10.

Maddy Bell fired in a game-high 27 points for the Eagles. Maria Jolly contributed nine.

The Cardinals are now 1-6 overall and 1-4 in the WMD, with their next game scheduled for next Tuesday at Pentwater in the league.

Marion snapped a two-game losing streak with the win and lifted its record to 3-3 overall and 3-2 in the league.
