MUSKEGON – Mona Shores got the 2024 portion of the girls basketball season off in grand fashion Tuesday night with a 41-23 non-conference home win over Ludington.

The win was the second straight for the Sailors, who rose above .500 at 4-3 on the season, while the Orioles continue to hover at the break-even point with a 4-4 mark.

Khaleeya Cook finished with a game-high 17 points to lead the Sailors, and was the only player on either team to reach double figures.

Her teammate, Laynie Russell, came close with nine points, followed by Maddie Russell with six while Katie Phillips and Ava Freye added three apiece.

Ludington was led by Jordyn Anderson with seven points, followed by Karli Mesyar and Elianna Jeruzal, who ended the night with six each.

The Sailors jumped out to a quick 7-4 lead after the first eight minutes and never looked back. They had a 10-7 edge in the second and built a 17-11 lead at the half.

Mona Shores outscored Ludington, 8-4, and grew its lead to 10 points, 25-15, going into the fourth quarter and then finished the game with a 16-8 run in the final eight minutes.

Next up for the Sailors is another road trip Thursday night when they travel to meet up with Reeths-Puffer.
