MUSKEGON – The Montague boys wrestled to a fifth-place finish in the GMAA city tournament at Muskegon on Saturday.

Jimmy Thommen, Chris Aebig, Fletcher Thommen and Issac French earned third-place finishes on the day. Malachi Plunkett came in fourth in his weight class.

“The team showed tremendous grit today by coming back to beat kids that beat us earlier in the day several matches,” said Montague coach Kristoffer Maddox. “I’m proud of how we positively represented our school today.” 

Meanwhile, the girls were at Holt for a dual-style competition and went 2-3.

The Wildcats posted victories over Westland John Glenn (30-18) and Manton (42-0), but fell to Eaton Rapids (42-36), Dewitt (54-24) and Hastings (48-25).

Ava Pelton, Trisha Beckman and Savannah Winkleblack finished 5-0. Emma Pendell and Abby Thommen claimed 4-1 finishes.

The boys will be back to action on Wednesday at Ludington and the girls will visit Grand Haven on Friday.
