PORT HURON – The Muskegon Community College Lady Jayhawks dug themselves a deep hole in the first half and fell just short after a ferocious second-half comeback.

In the opening game of the Skippers New Years Classic at St. Clair Community College, the Lady Jayhawks lost 64-60 to Macomb Community College.

MCC (6-5) fell behind 11-7 after one quarter and 33-17 at the half.

“It was a tough start to today’s game,” Jayhawk coach Jason Cooper said. “We had a good second half, but you can’t fall behind by 16 points against a good team and expect to win. We almost did, but didn’t have enough in the tank.”

In the third quarter, MCC cut the deficit to 10 points. In the final quarter, the Lady Jayhawks had a 24-18 scoring advantage, but came up four points short.

McKena Wilson led Muskegon CC with 15 points and four rebounds. Arrionna Williams added 14 points, four rebounds, two steals and two assists. Ty’veonna Davis also reached double figures with 10 points and four rebounds. Ari Phillips had eight points and Remi Sponseller had seven points and 10 rebounds.

On Saturday, the Lady Jayhawks will take on Saint Clair County at 3 p.m. in the final game of the tournament.
