ZEELAND – The Reeths-Puffer boys basketball team remained unbeaten in the OK-Green with a narrow 53-51 win over Zeeland West on Friday.

The Rockets came out flat and went down 14-7 after the first quarter, but regrouped to tie things up at 24 going into halftime. The Rockets had a 29-27 second-half scoring advantage.

Zeeland West had an opportunity to steal the win in the closing seconds, but a layup came up just short.

“Really gritty win by our guys,” said Reeths-Puffer coach Nathan Aardema. “We got down big early and called timeout. We regained our footing and really settled in defensively.”

Travis Ambrose led with 15 points and eight rebounds. Eleven of his 15 points came in the second quarter to help the Rockets eliminate the deficit. Jaxson Whitaker added 11 points and six assists, while Marvin Moore had 10 points. Brayden Mitchelson chipped in nine points. Antrel Jones pushed through the flu to post eight points, six rebounds and three steals.

“Great win over a very good Zeeland West team at their place,” said Aardema.

Reeths-Puffer (12-1, 6-0) will travel to unbeaten Muskegon on Tuesday night.
