MARTIN – Ashley Folkema and the Western Michigan Christian girls’ basketball team held off a pesky Martin team, 59-51, on Monday night.

Folkema had a stellar night 30 points, nine rebounds and four assists.

“This was a very close game for us tonight,” said WMC coach Sarah Koetsier. “We worked hard to defend their 3-point shooters tonight and we had great looks on offense to find the open shot.”

The Warriors had a five-point lead as they rolled into halftime, 30-25. Martin cut into the deficit in the third quarter and managed to slash the Warriors lead to just 41-40 with a quarter left to play.

Maria Eenigenburg scored nine points, grabbed five rebounds and snagged three steals. Kristen VanOrman scored seven points and Kate Derdowski added six points. Tressa Arkema pulled down seven rebounds on the night.

“I am proud of how hard we worked tonight,” said Koetsier.

WMC (8-4, 3-0) visits Oakridge on Wednesday.
